Sternberg Museum of Natural History

Natural History · Hays, Kansas

Fort Hays State University's natural history museum in Hays, built around fossils pulled out of the Niobrara Chalk of western Kansas — the seabed of the shallow ocean that covered this country in the Cretaceous. Its most famous object is the fish-within-a-fish: a fourteen-foot Xiphactinus that swallowed a six-foot Gillicus whole and died of it, found by George Sternberg in 1952, and one of the handful of genuinely world-famous fossils.
