UNESCO World Heritage Site (2014): A 15 Km Chalk And Limestone Cliff Whose Layers Record The Asteroid Impact That Ended The Age Of The Dinosaurs; Hojerup'S Half Fallen Old Church Stands On The Edge · Hojerup, Region Zealand

Stevns Klint is a low chalk and limestone cliff running for roughly 15 km along the east coast of Zealand, about an hour south of Copenhagen, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for one thin, dark line in its face. That band, the so-called fish clay, marks the moment about 66 million years ago when an asteroid struck what is now Mexico and ended the age of the dinosaurs; its unusual iridium content, measured here and elsewhere, helped build the impact theory. Above the line, pale bryozoan limestone shows life recovering. Visitors come to see that boundary with their own eyes, to walk the cliff-top path, and to stand at Hojerup Old Church, a medieval church on the edge whose choir fell into the sea in 1928. Along the same coast lie an old limestone quarry with steps to the shore and the Cold War Museum Stevnsfort, a fortress tunnelled into the chalk. The honest caveat: the cliff is only some 40 m high, the famous line is thin and needs pointing out, and the beach is stony and partly closed by rock falls, so it rewards curiosity more than a quick photo stop.
