Stone Arch Bridge

National Register Of Historic Places · Minneapolis, Minnesota

A curving twenty-three-arch railway bridge of granite and limestone across the Mississippi at St Anthony Falls, built in 1883 by James J. Hill to carry his Great Northern trains into Minneapolis and now carrying walkers and cyclists instead. It is the only stone arch bridge on the whole Mississippi, it curves rather than runs straight because the geology gave Hill no choice, and it looks directly at the only true waterfall on the river. The view back from the middle of it — the falls, the mill ruins and the downtown skyline — is the photograph of Minneapolis.

West River Parkway at Portland Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55401, United States

Free and open at all hours as a public pedestrian and cycle crossing, lit after dark, with no vehicle access. NOTE that a major stonework rehabilitation began in 2023 and has run in phases, closing sections and at times the whole crossing — check current status with the Minneapolis Park Board or MnDOT before travelling. Views from both banks and from Mill Ruins Park remain available regardless.
