Stone Mountain Park

Rock Formation · Stone Mountain, Georgia

A granite dome standing more than 700 feet above the pine country east of Atlanta, and the largest exposed mass of its kind anywhere — an ancient pluton the surrounding land eroded away from. Cut into its north face is the largest bas-relief carving on earth, three acres depicting the Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, begun in 1923 by the sculptor who later carved Mount Rushmore and not completed until 1972. The summit is also where the Ku Klux Klan was refounded in 1915, and the carving cannot honestly be separated from that. The state owns the mountain and a private company runs the park around it.

1000 Robert E Lee Boulevard, Stone Mountain, Georgia, 30083, United States

Park open daily, generally 5:00 to midnight, with attraction hours much shorter and seasonal. Parking is charged per vehicle and is effectively the entrance fee; the mountain, trails and lake are free beyond that. Attractions are bundled into a separately ticketed Adventure Pass. The evening laser and drone show runs seasonally — check the calendar before travelling.
