Stone Mountain State Park

Subnational Park · Roaring Gap, North Carolina

A bare granite dome rising more than six hundred feet out of the surrounding forest in the northern foothills, and the centre of a 14,353-acre park. The rock is a Devonian quartz diorite that pushed up into much older gneiss, and it is now one of the premier big-wall climbing crags in the south-east. At its foot stands the Hutchinson Homestead, a mid-nineteenth-century farm left with its original furnishings, looking straight up at the dome.

3042 Frank Parkway, Roaring Gap, North Carolina, 28668, United States

FREE and open daily, with hours that shift by month - roughly 7 AM to 6 PM in winter and to 9 PM in midsummer. Closed Christmas Day. The campground is open year round; the Hutchinson Homestead buildings are open seasonally, generally spring through autumn. The park is a National Natural Landmark.
