Stonehenge

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Stonehenge, Avebury And Associated Sites (1986). A Ring Of Standing Stones Raised In Stages From About 3000 BC To 1500 BC, The Larger Sarsens Hauled Some 25 Km And The Smaller Bluestones From Wales. The Most Famous Prehistoric Monument In The World, Seen From A Path Around The Stones, With A Visitor Centre Two Kilometres Away · Amesbury, England

Stonehenge is a ring of standing stones on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, raised in stages from about 3000 BC to 1500 BC and the best known prehistoric monument in the world. The big sarsen stones came from about 25 km away, while the smaller bluestones were brought from Wales, some 240 km off, by methods still argued over. Nobody knows for certain why it was built, though the circle lines up with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. You walk a path around the stones; you cannot touch them, and the ordinary visit stays outside the circle. The visitor centre, with an exhibition and reconstructed Neolithic houses, stands 2 km away and a shuttle runs between. Be honest: the stones are smaller than many expect, the main road is audible, the walk round takes well under an hour, and the site is crowded, so a visit can feel short for the price paid. Timed tickets are essential and sell out in busy months.

Stonehenge opens daily with timed entry slots, and hours are longer in summer and shorter in winter, commonly from morning to late afternoon or early evening, with the last entry well before closing. Tickets are for a set half-hour and sell out in busy months, so book ahead. Entry is never free, but the stones can be seen from the public road and footpaths around the site at no cost, at a distance. The inner circle is closed to ordinary visitors; special-access visits happen outside normal hours by arrangement only. The solstices bring open-access gatherings, and gates are closed for private events. Confirm hours, slots and closing dates close to your date, as they vary by season.
