Stones River National Battlefield
National Battlefield · Murfreesboro, Tennessee
The ground outside Murfreesboro where the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of Tennessee fought from 31 December 1862 to 2 January 1863 and produced the highest percentage of casualties of any major battle of the Civil War. The Union held, and Lincoln wrote afterwards that the country could scarcely have lived over losing it. The park holds the Slaughter Pen, a national cemetery, and the Hazen Brigade Monument — raised by the soldiers themselves in 1863 and the oldest intact Civil War memorial in the United States.
