Stowe

Resort Area · Stowe, Vermont

The most famous ski town in the eastern United States, a village of white clapboard and a church spire at the foot of Mount Mansfield with a resort seven miles up the Mountain Road behind it. It has been in the ski business since the 1930s and it has spent the time since becoming the thing people picture when they think of New England in winter. The Von Trapp family settled above the village after leaving Austria and their lodge is still there, which is why an Alpine story ended up attached to a Vermont mountain.

The village is open at all times and free to walk. ⚠ ROUTE 108 THROUGH SMUGGLERS' NOTCH, JUST BEYOND THE RESORT, CLOSES EVERY WINTER - roughly with the first heavy snow until late spring - and satnav routing does not always know it. The ski season runs roughly late November to mid April depending on snow, and the resort sits on a major multi-resort season pass. Summer lift and mountain-bike operations run roughly late June to early September. ⚠ THE VILLAGE AND THE RESORT ARE SEVEN MILES APART on the Mountain Road, and a seasonal shuttle runs the corridor in winter. THE STOWE RECREATION PATH IS OPEN AND FREE YEAR ROUND. ⚠ FOLIAGE IN THE FIRST HALF OF OCTOBER AND THE CHRISTMAS FORTNIGHT BOOK MONTHS AHEAD. April into early June is mud season and much of the valley closes.
