Straits State Park
Michigan State Park · St. Ignace, Michigan
Straits State Park sits on the north shore of the Straits of Mackinac at St. Ignace, in the Upper Peninsula, looking straight across the water at the Mackinac Bridge. It is a small state park, far smaller than the big lakeshore parks, and its value is one thing: an open view of the five mile suspension bridge, the freighters passing under it and the shoreline of the Lower Peninsula beyond. A campground runs close to the water, there is a day-use and picnic area, and a memorial to Father Marquette, the French missionary, is commonly listed on the grounds (confirm what is there and where). The water is cold and the current in the Straits is strong, so this is a place to look, camp and walk, not to swim. It suits road trippers breaking the drive north, campers who want a bridge view and families waiting for a Mackinac Island ferry. Allow one to two hours as a stop or a full weekend as a base. A Recreation Passport is needed for entry.

Michigan state parks are commonly open daily from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, and this park is generally treated as open year-round for day visitors, though confirm current posted hours with the Michigan DNR. The campground is seasonal, typically late spring through early autumn, and reservations for summer weekends and bridge-walk weekends fill well ahead, so confirm opening and closing dates and the booking window before you plan around it. A Recreation Passport is needed for a vehicle, and a daily-use alternative may be sold at the gate or by self-pay - confirm. In winter the shoreline road and picnic areas may be plowed only in part, and snow off Lake Huron can be heavy in the St. Ignace area, so check conditions.
