Stratford Festival

Stratford Festival (Non Profit Repertory Theatre) · Stratford, Ontario

The Stratford Festival is the largest classical repertory theatre company in North America, in the small city of Stratford, Ontario, about two hours' drive west of Toronto. It began in 1953 in a tent, with Alec Guinness in Richard III on a thrust stage that pushes into the audience, and that stage lives on in the Festival Theatre, where no seat is far from the actors. A season of roughly April or May to October or November plays across several theatres, including the Festival, Avon, Tom Patterson and Studio, with Shakespeare, classics, big musicals and new plays running in repertory, so different shows play on different days. The town is built for theatregoers, with the Avon River, swans, parks, gardens, restaurants and bed and breakfasts. It suits adults and teenagers who like live theatre, and it works best as a one- to three-night trip. Popular shows sell out, so book ahead. Confirm season dates and the current playbill.

The festival runs seasonally, roughly from April or May to October or November, with performances most days across several theatres and a mix of matinees and evenings. Because the company plays in repertory, a show runs on scattered dates rather than every night, so the calendar matters more than a weekly pattern. The box office keeps seasonal hours, usually open before and during performances and online all the time. Backstage tours, talks and other extras run in season and often need advance booking. Outside the season the theatres are mostly dark, though the town stays open. Check the current playbill and box office hours on the festival site before you travel.
