Stratford Hall

Historic House · Stratford, Virginia

An H-shaped brick Great House of the 1730s on a bluff over the Potomac in the Northern Neck, built by Thomas Lee and startling for its clustered chimney groups, which you can walk between on the roof. It is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and of Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee — the only house in America that produced two signers of the Declaration of Independence. Below it, the cliffs shed Miocene fossils onto a private beach.
