Pleasant, Pretty And Very Commercial, Best With A Ticket For A Play · Stratford-upon-Avon, England

Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in Warwickshire where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and buried in 1616. The half-timbered house on Henley Street is the centre of the visit, run with several other sites by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust: Anne Hathaway's Cottage in the village of Shottery, Hall's Croft, Nash's House and Mary Arden's farm. Holy Trinity Church, where the grave lies, asks for a small donation. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre stands on the river, and its tower gives a view over the Avon. You can hire a rowing boat on the river. It is pretty but very commercial and touristy, with souvenir shops, tour coaches, tea rooms and chain restaurants, and the main streets are crowded in summer. Plays sell out well ahead, so book first and plan the sightseeing round the show, not the other way round. A day trip from London Marylebone takes about 2 hours by train, and most visits need a full day.
