Strathcona Provincial Park
British Columbia'S Oldest Provincial Park, Established 1911, Covering About 2,500 Square Kilometres Of Central Vancouver Island; Contains Della Falls, Among The Highest Waterfalls In Canada At About 440 Metres, And The Golden Hinde, The Island'S Highest Peak · Campbell River, British Columbia
Strathcona was BRITISH COLUMBIA'S FIRST PROVINCIAL PARK, established in 1911, and it protects about two thousand five hundred square kilometres of the mountainous spine of Vancouver Island - a landscape most visitors to the island never see, because they stay on the coast. DELLA FALLS drops roughly four hundred and forty metres in three cascades and is among the highest waterfalls in Canada; reaching it requires a boat up Great Central Lake and then a sixteen-kilometre walk, which keeps the numbers down. THE GOLDEN HINDE, at two thousand one hundred and ninety-five metres, is the highest point on Vancouver Island and a multi-day trip from any direction. What most people do see is the Forbidden Plateau and Paradise Meadows - subalpine meadow with boardwalk trails, reachable by road, and among the most accessible alpine country in the province. Highway 28 crosses the park's northern end.
Highway 28, central Vancouver Island, Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada
OPEN YEAR-ROUND WITH A LONG SEASON AT THE ROADSIDE AND A SHORT ONE UP HIGH. THE PARADISE MEADOWS TRAILHEAD IS REACHED BY PAVED ROAD and the boardwalk loops there are walkable from roughly late June once the snow clears, into October. BUTTLE LAKE AND THE HIGHWAY 28 CORRIDOR ARE OPEN ALL YEAR with seasonal campgrounds. SNOW LIES DEEP ON THE PLATEAU FROM NOVEMBER INTO JUNE and the area becomes a ski touring and snowshoeing destination, with the adjacent Mount Washington resort operating separately. DELLA FALLS REQUIRES A BOAT UP GREAT CENTRAL LAKE AND A 16KM WALK EACH WAY - water taxis operate seasonally and must be booked. BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING REQUIRES FEES AND, IN SOME AREAS, REGISTRATION. Campgrounds are reservable through BC Parks and fill in July and August.
