Sue-meg State Park

State Park · Trinidad, California

Sue-meg State Park, long known as Patrick's Point State Park, sits on a forested headland on the Humboldt County coast just north of Trinidad. The park was renamed in 2022 to restore the Yurok name for the place, Sumeg. It combines rocky headlands, Wedding Rock and other lookout points, Agate Beach with its driftwood and agates - confirm the rules for collecting - and a recreated Yurok village with traditional houses - confirm what is open. Tide pools, whale watching from the bluffs, and a campground in spruce forest - confirm size and booking - round out the park. Fog, rain and cool air are normal, and the trails include steep sections and stairs. It suits visitors who want wild Northern California coast and Native culture rather than a swimming beach, and it is a poor choice for a hot sunbathing day. Expect fog, forest and long views over a cold, wild sea, with steep paths and few services.

California State Parks has generally run Sue-meg as a day-use park from around sunrise to sunset, with the campgrounds on their own check-in times - confirm the current hours, the entrance fee and whether a kiosk is staffed. The recreated Yurok village is open to walk through but may have limits - confirm access and guidance. Winter storms bring big surf, fallen trees and closures of trails or the road at short notice, and fog or drizzle can sit over the headland for days in summer. Services are limited: Trinidad, a few miles south, has the nearest food, fuel and shops. Check State Parks and local alerts before you drive, and carry rain gear and layers whatever the season.
