Sugar Hill

Hilltop Village Just West Of Franconia With Some Of The Widest Views Of The White Mountains, Known For Fields Of Wild Lupines In June And For Polly'S Pancake Parlor, Serving Since The Late 1930s. · Sugar Hill, New Hampshire

A small hilltop village just west of Franconia, spread along Route 117 and a few back roads on a long ridge that looks straight across to the Franconia Range, the Kinsmans and Cannon Mountain. Sugar Hill has some of the widest open views of the White Mountains that can be seen from a car, and much of the town is still hayfields, stone walls, old farmhouses and country inns rather than shops. In June the roadside fields fill with wild lupines in purple, pink and white, and the town holds a festival around the bloom. Polly's Pancake Parlor, on a hillside farm on Route 117, has served pancakes with its own maple syrup since the late 1930s and draws lines on busy weekends. Nearby, Harman's country store is known for aged cheddar, a small historical museum tells the story of the hill farms and the early ski resort era, and St. Matthew's, a tiny wooden chapel, holds summer services. It is a quiet place to stay close to Franconia Notch, with sunsets over the mountains from Sunset Hill Road, and it has almost no services of its own.
