Sukhothai Historical Park
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Historic Town Of Sukhothai And Associated Historic Towns (1991); First Capital Of Siam From 1238 · Sukhothai, Sukhothai
Sukhothai Historical Park holds the ruins of the city that Thai history treats as the first capital of Siam, founded around 1238, whose name is usually translated as the dawn of happiness. Under kings such as Ramkhamhaeng the kingdom flourished in the late thirteenth century, and tradition credits it with the creation of the Thai script, recorded on the famous Ramkhamhaeng inscription. Today the old walled city, about 12 kilometres from the modern town of New Sukhothai, is a quiet park of brick and laterite temples, stucco Buddha images and lotus ponds under big trees, divided into a central zone and outer zones to the north, west, south and east with separate tickets. The great temple of Wat Mahathat with its lotus-bud chedi, the huge seated Buddha of Wat Si Chum and the island temple of Wat Sa Si are the highlights, and the graceful walking Buddha is Sukhothai's gift to Thai art. Most visitors rent bicycles at the gate. The park shares its UNESCO listing with Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet, and is the most famous place to celebrate Loy Krathong.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the central zone has opened from about 6.30 am to about 7.30 pm, with later opening and lighting on some evenings, especially weekends in the cool season and during festivals; the north and west zones have opened about 7.30 or 8 am to about 5 pm, with last entry shortly before; the park is open every day. The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum opens about 9 am to 4 pm and, like many Thai national museums, has a weekly closing day; check it. Loy Krathong changes everything for its several days, with events into the night and huge crowds. The traps that ruin a day are cycling in the midday heat, finding the museum closed on its closing day, missing the daytime songthaews back to New Sukhothai and arriving at Loy Krathong with no room booked. Confirm current times before relying on them.
