Sulmona

Historic Centre Of Sulmona In The Peligna Valley, With A Thirteenth Century Aqueduct Along Piazza Garibaldi And A Confetti Industry Running Since The Fifteenth Century · Sulmona, Abruzzo

A town in a high valley ringed by mountains on every side, which is the first thing you notice and the reason it looks like nowhere else in central Italy: snow on the Majella for half the year, standing above a main square with a medieval aqueduct running along one edge of it on twenty-one arches. Ovid was born here and the town has never stopped saying so. What it actually lives on is confetti, the sugared almonds that go to weddings across Italy, made here since the fifteenth century and sold in enormous constructed flowers and animals that are the strangest shop windows in the country. The other thing to come for is Easter: on the Sunday morning a statue of the Virgin is carried into the square in black mourning, sees the risen Christ, and the bearers run with her across the square while the black cloak falls away and doves are released. The whole town turns out and it is genuinely moving.
