Summersville Lake

Lake · Summersville, West Virginia

The largest lake in West Virginia, held back by the largest rock-fill dam in the eastern United States, and unusually clear for an Appalachian reservoir — clear enough that it has a real scuba diving following and gets called the Little Bahamas of the East. It is also the reservoir the Army Corps of Engineers draws down every autumn to create the Gauley whitewater releases, which changes it completely for two months of the year.

Summersville Lake Road, Summersville, West Virginia, 26651, United States

Open year round, free. The lake is at summer pool roughly May to early September; from September the Corps of Engineers draws it down by tens of feet for the Gauley releases and it stays low into spring. Marina and swimming areas are seasonal.
