Sumpter Valley Railway

Industrial Heritage · Sumpter, Oregon

A three-foot narrow gauge heritage railway running about five miles between McEwen and Sumpter in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, on the right of way of the original Sumpter Valley Railway that hauled logs and gold-rush freight from 1890. Volunteers rebuilt it from nothing beginning in the 1970s. Two steam locomotives work the line, and it runs past the enormous Sumpter dredge - a floating gold dredge that ate the valley floor and left the tailings still visible from the train.

Sumpter Valley Highway, Sumpter, Oregon, 97877, United States

⚠ STRICTLY SEASONAL AND IT DOES NOT RUN DAILY. Trains operate on a published timetable in the warmer months, typically weekends and holidays, and the schedule varies year to year - check before travelling, because Sumpter is thirty minutes from Baker City and hours from anywhere else. Special-event trains run through the season and sell out. The railway is closed entirely in winter. The Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area a mile away keeps its own, generally free, seasonal hours.
