Sumter National Forest
National Forest · Walhalla, South Carolina
Three separated districts of national forest running from the Blue Ridge escarpment down through the piedmont — about three hundred and seventy thousand acres in total, and the only genuinely mountainous public land South Carolina has. The Andrew Pickens district in the north-west corner holds the state's side of the Chattooga, a National Wild and Scenic River and one of the hardest and best whitewater runs in the eastern United States, and the Ellicott Rock Wilderness where South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina meet in the middle of a river.
Walhalla, South Carolina, United States
FREE and open at all times, year round — National Forest System land with no gate and no general entrance fee. DEVELOPED RECREATION AREAS CHARGE a modest day-use fee and several are seasonal. ⚠ THE CHATTOOGA IS A WILD AND SCENIC RIVER WITH ITS OWN RULES: sections are closed to boating, permits and self-registration apply in places, and the whitewater sections are run with licensed outfitters. Hunting seasons are set by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and a state licence is required. The forest is in three widely separated districts — Andrew Pickens in the mountains, Long Cane and Enoree in the piedmont — and they are hours apart.
