Sunken Gardens

Botanical Garden · St. Petersburg, Florida

Four acres of tropical garden sitting fifteen feet below street level in the middle of St. Petersburg, begun in 1903 when a plumber named George Turner drained a shallow lake and discovered the muck at the bottom would grow anything. It opened to the public in 1935, survived a century of Florida development around it, and the city bought it in 1999 to stop it being redeveloped.

1825 4th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida, 33704, United States
