Sunset State Beach
State Park · Watsonville, California
Sunset State Beach lies on the shore of Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz County, south of Santa Cruz near Watsonville and the Pajaro River, among strawberry and lettuce fields. A long, wide beach of pale sand runs for miles beneath a wall of dunes, with Monterey pines and cypress sheltering a campground tucked into the dunes - confirm the number and type of sites. The setting is open, windy and quiet compared with the beaches of Santa Cruz: fog commonly covers the sand until afternoon, the surf is strong and the water is cold, and strong rip currents make it a beach for walking, kites and sunsets rather than swimming. Manresa State Beach is a separate park farther north, and Pajaro Dunes lies just down the coast. Expect a long walk from the lot or campground to the water on soft sand, few services and a lot of wind. Bring layers, plan a half day or a night, and check the surf before you set out.

Day use runs about 8 AM to sunset, and the campground runs on its own check-in and check-out times, normally booked ahead through the State Parks reservation system - confirm both. A pay station collects the day-use fee, commonly around USD 10 a vehicle; confirm the current rate. Fog often covers the beach until the afternoon, and the wind picks up after about noon. Winter storms can close the access ramps or cover them with sand, and dry-season fire danger can limit campfires. Check the State Parks page and surf notices on the day you go.
