Svendborg and Tasinge

South Funen Harbour Town Of Wooden Ships And Ferries, Gateway To The Islands, Across The Sound From Tasinge With Valdemars Slot And The Skipper Village Of Troense · Svendborg, Region of Southern Denmark

Svendborg is a busy harbour town on the south coast of Funen and the main gateway to the South Funen Archipelago, a sheltered sea of small islands, sailing routes and ferry lines. Its harbour is famous for wooden ships: old sailing vessels moor along the quays, and a traditional wooden-ship yard has built and repaired them there for well over a century. Behind the harbour, a small old town of steep lanes, market squares and museums climbs the hill. A bridge across Svendborg Sound leads to Tasinge, a green island with Troense, a village of old skippers' houses, and Valdemars Slot, a 17th-century castle built for a son of Christian IV and later given to the naval hero Niels Juel, whose descendants are said to still own it. People come for the harbour life, the ferries to Aero and the smaller islands, sailing, cycling and a relaxed seaside stay. The honest caveat: Valdemars Slot and the summer boats are seasonal, the old town is small, and grey winter days are quiet.

Svendborg's harbour, streets and Tasinge's villages are open at all times and free. Valdemars Slot is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn with the longest hours in July, and closed in winter - confirm the current season. Town museums often close on Mondays and shorten hours in winter. From Copenhagen take an intercity train to Odense (roughly 1 hour 15-30 minutes) and change to the local Svendborg line (roughly 45 minutes), or drive roughly 2 hours over the Great Belt toll bridge. Aero ferries sail several times a day; car places need booking in summer, foot passengers rarely.
