Swallow Falls State Park

Maryland State Park · Oakland, Maryland

A short loop trail in far western Maryland linking four waterfalls on the Youghiogheny River and Muddy Creek, through one of the last stands of old-growth hemlock and white pine left in the state — trees that were standing before the Revolution. Muddy Creek Falls drops fifty-three feet and is the tallest free-falling waterfall in Maryland. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone camped in these woods together in 1918 and again in 1921.

Oakland, Maryland, United States

Open daily year round, generally 8 AM to sunset, with a modest per-person or per-vehicle service charge that is higher for out-of-state visitors and at weekends. THE CAR PARK FILLS AND THE PARK CLOSES ITS GATE when it does — on summer weekends and autumn colour weekends that happens by mid-morning. Camping is seasonal and booked through Maryland State Parks. WINTER ACCESS IS LIMITED and the trail is ice-covered; the falls freeze and are spectacular, but the footing is genuinely dangerous.
