Waly Chrobrego is the grand terraced embankment above the Oder in Szczecin, built around 1900 when the city was the Prussian port of Stettin. Up the hill stands the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, and the Philharmonic building, a bold modern block, is a short walk away. The city plan copies Paris, with avenues radiating from round squares in a star, so the centre feels wide and airy rather than medieval. Boats leave from the quay for Oder trips and a tour of the port, and the Szczecin Underground route shows old tunnels and a wartime shelter. Berlin is about two hours away by train. Be honest about the scale: Gdansk offers far more old town, more crowds and more reasons to travel. Szczecin suits a stopover, a Berlin side trip, or a day of terraces, a museum and a river walk. It is a pleasant, quiet city, not a major destination.

Oder boat trips run mainly from spring to autumn, with fewer sailings outside summer. The Szczecin Underground tours run at set times and often need booking.
