A Long Drive Into A Quiet Part Of Saskatchewan, A Rewarding Stop For Fossil And Landscape Fans · Eastend, Saskatchewan

The T.rex Discovery Centre stands on the edge of Eastend, a small town in the Frenchman River valley in south-west Saskatchewan, about 80 km south of Swift Current. It was built on the doorstep of the site where Scotty, one of the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever found, was discovered in 1991 in rocks about 66 million years old. Inside you can see a full cast of the dinosaur, a working fossil preparation lab where staff clean bones from rock, and galleries on life in the Late Cretaceous, when this dry valley was a warm, wet floodplain. In summer the centre runs field programs and dig experiences that put visitors on the hills with trained guides - these need booking ahead. The town also has the Wallace Stegner House museum and quiet river valley scenery. It is a long drive from anywhere, so plan fuel and a night in town. Grasslands National Park lies to the east, and Swift Current has the nearest large services.

The centre is seasonal in its full form: it is commonly open daily from May or June to early September with longer hours, and open fewer days, often midweek to Saturday, in the shoulder months, with a closure or very short hours in deep winter. I cannot give exact times, so confirm before you drive. The fossil lab is staffed when preparators are working and may be quiet on some days. Field programs and dig experiences run in summer only, often from late June, and are limited in number, so book ahead. Admission is charged, and the Wallace Stegner House museum in town has its own seasonal hours. If you arrive outside season, call first - the road is long and the town is small.
