Tacoma Narrows Bridge
Iconic Bridge · Tacoma, Washington
Twin suspension bridges across the Tacoma Narrows, and the site of the most famous structural failure in engineering history. The original bridge opened in July 1940, oscillated in a moderate wind from the day it was built, and tore itself apart on film four months later - footage still shown in physics and engineering courses worldwide. The 1950 replacement stands today alongside a second span added in 2007, and the wreckage of the first lies on the seabed below as an artificial reef.
