Tadoussac and the Saguenay Whales
Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park (Parks Canada And SÉPAQ) · Tadoussac, Quebec
Tadoussac is a small village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence where the deep Saguenay fjord meets the river, and it is one of the best places in eastern Canada to see whales. Cold, nutrient rich water draws minke and fin whales, with humpbacks and occasional blue whales, from about June to October, and an endangered population of beluga whales lives here, so approach rules for boats are strict. The area is protected as the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, run jointly by Parks Canada and Sepaq. You can watch from Zodiacs, larger cruise boats, sea kayaks or from shore viewpoints. It suits families, wildlife lovers and photographers, and the fjord is worth seeing even on a quiet day. Sightings are never guaranteed, the water is cold, and the village is small and busy in July and August. Allow a full day for a cruise and shore stops, and two days if you want to see the fjord and village. Confirm all schedules.

Whale-watching cruises run seasonally, commonly from late May or June to October, with the busiest departures in July, August and early September. Each operator sets its own departure times and season, so confirm online or by phone. Belugas live here all year, but boat tours are not offered in winter. Shore viewpoints and the village are open at all times, while the marine park visitor centres and interpretation sites keep seasonal hours. The free Tadoussac - Baie-Sainte-Catherine ferry across the Saguenay runs year round, often every 20 minutes or so in season, but lines can be long in summer. Morning departures often have calmer water. Check weather and fog before you go.
