Taghazout and Tamraght

Two Former Fishing Villages That Became Morocco'S Surf Centre, With A Line Of Right Hand Point Breaks Said To Work Best From Roughly September To April And A Year Round Beginner Beach · Taghazout, Souss-Massa

Taghazout and Tamraght are two villages on the coast road north of Agadir that between them turned Morocco into a surfing country. The draw is geological: a run of rocky headlands catches north-west Atlantic swell and bends it into long right-hand point waves, with Anchor Point the famous one and half a dozen others inside a short drive. Taghazout was a fishing village that collected travellers from the 1960s onward and now runs almost entirely on boards, wetsuits, yoga and breakfast; Tamraght, a few kilometres south, is lower-key and greener, backed by the banana stalls of Aourir and by argan hills climbing inland. Season matters more here than anywhere else nearby: the points work best from roughly September to April, and summer is often small or flat, which is fine for a first lesson and dull for anyone else. Honest caveats: the water is cold enough for a wetsuit in every month, the good points get crowded and territorial on a decent swell, a large resort zone has gone up along this coast and changed the villages for good, and a non-surfer may find three days plenty.

Nothing here has an opening time. The beaches, the points, the fishing cove and the coast road are open and free at any hour, and the only clocks that matter are the tide and the swell forecast. Surf schools and board hire work daylight hours, broadly 08:00 to 18:00, with lessons set for whichever tide suits the day; yoga and retreat timetables are weekly and booked ahead rather than walked into. Village shops and cafes keep long hours and thin out in the flat summer weeks. Getting there: Al Massira airport is roughly 40 km south-east of Taghazout, about 45 minutes by road, shared grand taxis and a city bus run the coast road up from Agadir in roughly 30-45 minutes, and there is no railway anywhere near. Book beds well ahead for the December to February swell season and for the school holidays - confirm current timetables and prices.
