Tahiti

The Largest Island Of French Polynesia And Its Gateway, Home Of The Capital Papeete And The International Airport, With The Famous Surf Break Of Teahupo'O · Papeete, French Polynesia

Tahiti is the largest island of French Polynesia and the place almost every visitor lands, at Faa'a international airport beside the capital, Papeete. Many people only pass through on the way to Moorea or Bora Bora, and Papeete itself is a busy, rather plain port town with heavy traffic and high prices. But the island rewards a few days. It is made of two old volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus: the larger Tahiti Nui, with deep valleys, waterfalls and peaks over 2,000 metres, and the smaller, quieter Tahiti Iti. Papeete's covered market sells fruit, fish, flowers, pareo and crafts, and in the evening food trucks called roulottes gather on the waterfront. Around the coast are black-sand beaches, Point Venus where Captain Cook observed the transit of Venus, the restored Arahurahu marae, the Faarumai waterfalls and the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands. At the end of the road on Tahiti Iti lies Teahupo'o, a heavy reef wave that hosted the 2024 Olympic surfing.

The island itself has no opening hours: beaches, the coast road, Point Venus and most viewpoints are open in daylight and free. Papeete's covered market is busiest early in the morning, runs through the day from Monday to Saturday and opens only for a short morning on Sunday, when it is at its liveliest with families buying food before church; confirm current days. The roulottes food trucks on the Vaiete waterfront set up in the early evening and stay into the night, fewer on quiet weekdays and in bad weather. The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands in Punaauia reopened after a long renovation but keeps its own days and hours, usually closed on Mondays; confirm before going. The Arahurahu marae and the Faarumai waterfalls are open sites best visited in daylight and dry weather. Boat trips to watch Teahupo'o leave from the end of the road on Tahiti Iti in the morning and depend on swell and weather. Shops and offices in Papeete close for a long lunch in places, close early on Saturday and are mostly shut on Sunday. The Heiva festival fills evenings in July with dance and song competitions. Traffic into and out of Papeete is heavy at the morning and evening rush, so allow extra time for ferries and flights.
