Takasakiyama Monkey Park
Takasakiyama Monkey Park, A Hillside Reserve In Oita Where Wild Japanese Macaques, In A Large Troop Of About A Thousand, Come Down To Be Fed And Watched At Close Range. Sold As A Nature Park Rather Than A Zoo; The Monkeys Run Free. · Oita, Oita
Takasakiyama Monkey Park is a hillside reserve in Oita, on the Kyushu coast, where a free-living troop of Japanese macaques, about a thousand animals, lives on the slopes of Mount Takasaki. It has long been described as one of the largest troops in the world - confirm. The monkeys are wild, not caged: keepers put out food at set feeding times in the morning and afternoon - confirm - and the troop comes down to the feeding ground, where visitors watch from a short distance. You see mothers carrying babies, young monkeys in play fights and dominant males taking the best spots. The park is a short walk up from the bus stop and costs a small admission - confirm. It suits families, animal lovers and anyone with a free half day in Oita or Beppu. It is worth the detour for the feeding show, and less so if you arrive when the troop is up in the hills. Follow the rules: do not look the monkeys in the eye, do not feed them yourself, and keep bags closed. They can bite.
