Talgar Gorge and Talgar Peak
The Entrance To The Talgar Sector Of The Ili Alatau National Park: A River Gorge, Waterfalls And Multi Day Trails To Talgar Peak Base Camps. The Peak Itself Is A Mountaineering Objective; Most Visitors Only Reach The Lower Gorge. · Talgar, Almaty Region
Talgar Gorge is a river valley in the Talgar sector of the Ili-Alatau National Park, about 25 km east of Almaty above the town of Talgar. The lower gorge has forest, a rushing river, and easy trails that suit an ordinary day walk, which makes it a good pick for people who have done Medeu and want somewhere quieter. Talgar Peak, at about 5,000 m the highest summit of the range, is a different matter: it is a mountaineering objective needing glacier gear, acclimatisation, a guide and several days. Most visitors only see the lower gorge, and that is worth a half to full day from Almaty. Be honest about it: the gorge is pleasant rather than famous, and the scenery near the entrance is modest. Higher up, the park permit and border-zone rules near the frontier matter, so check before you plan anything past the lower valley. Summer weekends bring local picnic crowds near the gate; go on a weekday for a quiet river walk.

There are no fixed visiting hours for the trails, but the park entrance is staffed in daylight, roughly morning to early evening, and you should aim to be back before dusk. A national park permit or fee is normally needed, and the upper valleys near the frontier can need an extra border-zone permit that is arranged in advance through a guide or the park office. Access can close in snow, floods, rockfall or avalanche risk, often from late autumn to spring. Confirm permits, fees and trail status before you go.
