UNESCO World Heritage Site (The 20th Century Architecture Of Frank Lloyd Wright); National Historic Landmark · Scottsdale, Arizona
Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home, studio and school in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, begun in 1937 and built largely by Wright and his apprentices from desert rocks set in concrete, with canvas and later glass roofs to let in the desert light. Wright called it a look over the rim of the world. It is a National Historic Landmark and one of eight Wright buildings inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, and it remains the home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. It can only be visited on timed tours — guided or audio, depending on the season — which should be booked ahead in winter. In summer it opens only in the mornings, Thursday to Monday.
