A small historic town at the meeting of the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna rivers, about 2.5 hours north of Anchorage, and the base for climbing and flightseeing around Denali. Its log cabins and false-front buildings form a historic district along Main Street, with the 1923 Fairview Inn, Nagley's Store and roadside cafés, galleries and breweries. Every spring and summer, climbers attempting Denali register at the National Park Service's Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station, then fly by ski plane to the Kahiltna Glacier base camp. Visitors take flightseeing tours around Denali's peaks, often landing on a glacier, and on clear days see the mountain from the riverfront. In 2026 flights cost about $285-$615 per person, with glacier landings adding about $120-$170 and a $15 Denali National Park entrance fee.
