Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
National Monument · Strong City, Kansas
Eleven thousand acres of the Flint Hills, and the largest protected remnant of an ecosystem that once covered around a hundred and seventy million acres of North America and of which something under four per cent survives. It was ploughed everywhere the ground would take a plough; the Flint Hills kept their prairie because the limestone underneath made them useless for crops and good only for grazing. A bison herd was reintroduced in 2009. The National Park Service runs it jointly with The Nature Conservancy, which owns most of the land.
