Tamástslikt Cultural Institute
History Museum · Pendleton, Oregon
A museum and research institute on the Umatilla Indian Reservation near Pendleton, run by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and telling the history of the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla peoples in their own words. It is the only museum on the Oregon Trail interpreted from the perspective of the people the trail crossed, and the permanent exhibition is deliberately arranged as We Were, We Are, We Will Be - which is the argument the whole building makes.
47106 Wildhorse Boulevard, Pendleton, Oregon, 97801, United States
Open most of the week with a modest admission and free parking, but ⚠ CLOSED ON SOME WEEKDAYS AND THE PATTERN HAS VARIED - check before travelling, because Pendleton is a long detour from anywhere else. The outdoor living culture village runs seasonally with demonstrations. ⚠ PHOTOGRAPHY IS RESTRICTED IN PARTS OF THE MUSEUM at the direction of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, who own and operate it. During the Pendleton Round-Up in September the whole town's lodging fills.
