Tamiami Trail
Scenic Highway · Ochopee, Florida
The road that cut the Everglades in half. Completed in 1928 after thirteen years of dynamiting a route through limestone and sawgrass, it opened south Florida to cars and simultaneously dammed the sheet of water that had flowed south for millennia — and the state has spent the last two decades lifting sections of it back onto bridges to let the water through again.
U.S. Highway 41, Ochopee, Florida, 34141, United States
A public highway, open at all hours and free. Visitor centres and parks along it keep their own hours. Fuel and mobile coverage are sparse across the Everglades stretch.
