Tanger Outlets Rehoboth Beach
Group Of Open Air Outlet Shopping Centers Run By Tanger Along Coastal Highway (Delaware Route 1) Between Lewes And Rehoboth Beach, In A State With No Sales Tax · Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Tanger Outlets Rehoboth Beach is not one mall but a string of open-air outlet centers spread across several sites along Route 1, the Coastal Highway, on the stretch between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Each center is a horseshoe or row of single-story brand stores around its own parking lot, and together they hold around a hundred outlet shops - clothing, shoes, kitchenware, sportswear, handbags, toys and home goods; confirm the current directory, because tenants change and a store you want may be in a different center from the one you parked at. Two things bring the crowds. Delaware has no sales tax, so the tag price is the final price, and the beaches next door fill the resort with visitors who need something to do when it rains, on the day they arrive, or on a Sunday before driving home. Expect packed lots and slow traffic on summer weekends and holiday weekends. Be aware that much outlet stock is made specially for outlets rather than left over from regular stores, and that Route 1 is a fast, wide highway that is dangerous to cross on foot or to turn left across without a signal.

The centers keep ordinary retail hours, usually opening mid-morning and closing in the evening from Monday to Saturday with a somewhat shorter Sunday; summer and the December holiday season often bring longer hours, and winter weekdays can be shorter. Confirm current hours before you drive, and remember that individual stores and restaurants set their own. The centers are usually closed on Thanksgiving Day or open only late, and closed on Christmas Day and often Easter Sunday; Black Friday and some holiday weekends start early. There is no admission and parking is free, but on summer Saturdays, rainy beach days, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends the lots fill by late morning and Route 1 backs up for miles in both directions. Weekday mornings in the off season are the quietest. Because the stores sit in separate centers along the highway, moving between them usually means driving and re-parking rather than walking; do not try to walk across Route 1. Stores sometimes close early for inventory or storms, and hurricane and nor'easter warnings can shut the whole resort area.
