Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park
Alabama Historical State Park · McCalla, Alabama
Fifteen hundred acres in the woods south-west of Birmingham around three stone blast furnaces that made iron for the Confederacy until Union cavalry burned them in March 1865. The stacks were restored in the 1970s and stand in the creek bed much as they were, with a working water-powered gristmill beside them and the Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama on the site. It is called a state park and is run by its own furnace and foundry commission, and its enormous campground and monthly trade days are what most Alabamians actually come for.
12632 Confederate Parkway, McCalla, Alabama, 35111, United States
Run by the Tannehill Furnace and Foundry Commission rather than Alabama State Parks, with its own hours and fees. Grounds generally open daily; the Iron and Steel Museum keeps shorter hours. Trade days on the third weekend of most months from spring to autumn.
