Tanum Rock Carvings

UNESCO World Heritage Site (1994): Bronze Age Carvings Of Ships, Hunters, Animals And Lovers On Bare Granite, About 3,000 Years Old, With The Vitlycke Museum And A Rebuilt Bronze Age Farm · Tanumshede, Vastra Gotaland County

Around Tanumshede in northern Bohuslan, the bare granite that the ice scraped clean carries one of the richest collections of Bronze Age rock art in Europe, listed by UNESCO in 1994. The carvings are usually dated to roughly 1700-500 BC - archaeologists disagree on details - and show ships with crews, men with spears and axes, bulls, horses, chariots, footprints, weapons and scenes that look like rituals, fights and weddings. Several hundred panels are known in the area. The most visited, at Vitlycke, is a large sloping slab with the famous 'bridal couple' embracing beside a figure with an axe; nearby Aspeberget, Fossum and Litsleby show fleets of ships, hunters and a huge spear-carrying figure. The Vitlycke Museum and a reconstructed Bronze Age farm explain who carved them and why. The honest caveat: many figures are filled with red paint by the heritage authorities to make them readable, a modern choice that is debated, and in flat midday light the unpainted carvings can be hard to see at all.

The carving panels are on open ground and can be visited at any time, all year, free of charge; there are no gates. The Vitlycke Museum is seasonal, typically open daily from late spring to early autumn and closed or open only on selected days in winter - check the current schedule before a trip. Entry to the museum has been free in recent years, but confirm locally. The reconstructed Bronze Age farm next to the museum is usually staffed only in summer. Vitlycke lies just south of Tanumshede, beside the E6 about 1.5-2 hours north of Gothenburg by car; regional Vasttrafik buses serve Tanumshede, and from there it is a walk or short taxi ride. Nothing needs to be booked for a self-guided visit, but guided carving walks in summer and occasional evening lamp walks in autumn and winter may need a booking with the museum.
