Art Museum In Downtown Roanoke In A 2008 Building By Randall Stout; Holds American Art, Folk Art, Southern Appalachian Material And Studio Glass · Roanoke, Virginia

An art museum in downtown Roanoke that most people notice before they have any idea what is inside it, because Randall Stout gave the city a building of folded steel and glass that looks like something shearing out of the ground beside the railway tracks. Stout worked for Frank Gehry and it shows; the roofline was meant to echo the ridges around the valley and the local argument about whether it succeeds has been running since it opened in 2008. Inside, the collection is stronger than a city of a hundred thousand has any business having - nineteenth and twentieth-century American art, a solid American folk art holding, southern Appalachian material, contemporary work and a good decorative arts and studio glass collection - shown across a dozen or so galleries with a substantial rotation of touring exhibitions. General admission has been free in recent years, which changes what the place is for: it becomes somewhere you drop into for half an hour rather than a ticketed day out.
