Taxco

Pueblo MáGico / Ciudad De La Plata · Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero

A white town poured down a mountainside in northern Guerrero, so steep that the taxis are white Volkswagen Beetles because nothing larger fits the streets. Silver was found here in the 1530s, and an eighteenth-century strike made one man, Jose de la Borda, spectacularly rich. He spent it on a single church, Santa Prisca, built in about seven years in the 1750s and one of the finest baroque interiors in the Americas, with gilded altarpieces and a pink-stone facade. Then the silver ran down. The modern silver trade is not colonial continuity: it restarted in the 1930s after an American architect, William Spratling, set up a workshop and trained local apprentices. Everything Taxco sells today descends from that. The town sits about 170 km from Mexico City, roughly three hours by bus, with red-tile roofs, cobbled lanes and steep stairs. It is crowded on weekends and Holy Week, when hooded penitents process. Guerrero has had security concerns, so check state travel advice and arrive and leave by day.
