Te Anau
The Gateway Town To Milford And Doubtful Sounds, On The Shore Of The South Island'S Largest Lake, With Glowworm Caves Reached Only By Boat Across The Water And A Lakefront That Empties Out Once The Day Tour Buses Leave For Milford Road Each Morning · Te Anau, Southland
Te Anau is the small lakeside town on the shore of Lake Te Anau, the South Island's largest lake and the gateway through which almost every visitor reaches Milford Sound, two hours up the Milford Road, and Doubtful Sound, reached by boat and coach from Manapouri nearby. The lake itself is the town's quieter feature - a long, fjord-fingered body of glacial water backed by the Kepler Mountains, calm enough most mornings for a flat reflection and a good walk along the lakefront promenade. Across the water, reachable only by boat, the Te Anau Glowworm Caves hold a living glowworm colony in a limestone cave system carved by an underground river, a short guided tour unrelated to either sound. The town fills with day-tour buses each morning as everyone heads to Milford, then empties out by late afternoon - the quiet evening by the lake, once the buses are gone, is as much the point of staying here as anything on an itinerary. Te Anau is small - one main street, a scatter of motels and holiday parks - and works as a comfortable overnight base rather than a sight in its own right.
The shore of Lake Te Anau, about 2 hours from Queenstown, Te Anau, Southland, New Zealand
Te Anau township has no gates and the lakefront is open at all hours, free of charge. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves run guided boat tours on a fixed daily timetable, typically departing from the lakefront several times between late morning and early evening, with extra sailings added in summer - no independent access to the caves exists outside a booked tour. The DOC visitor centre on the lakefront keeps standard business hours, roughly 8:30am to 5pm, and is the place to check current Milford Road status and Great Walk hut availability before setting out. Cafes and the supermarket keep normal small-town hours and close relatively early outside peak summer.
