Teatro Colon
National Historic Monument; The Main Opera House Of Argentina, Opened 1908, And Regularly Ranked Among The Acoustically Finest Concert Halls In The World · Buenos Aires, Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires
The Teatro Colon is the great opera house of the southern hemisphere and one of the finest acoustic spaces on earth, routinely placed alongside the Vienna Musikverein and Boston's Symphony Hall. It took twenty years and three architects to build and opened in 1908, when Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world and spent like it: Italian marble, French stained glass, Venetian mosaics, and a horseshoe auditorium seven tiers high under a dome painted by Raul Soldi. Almost every great singer and conductor of the twentieth century performed here. There are two ways in. The guided tour, run daily, walks through the foyers, the golden hall and into a box to see the auditorium, and is the easy option for any visitor. The better way is a performance, and the Colon keeps some tickets affordable: seats and standing places high in the gods are cheap and have excellent sound, though the view of the stage is partial. The season runs from autumn to early summer.
