Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

Marble Doric Temple Of Poseidon (About 440 BC) On A Cliff Above The Aegean, Famous For Its Sunsets And For Lord Byron'S Carved Name · Sounio, Attica

The Temple of Poseidon stands on the cliff of Cape Sounion, the southern tip of Attica, about 60 m above the Aegean and roughly 70 km from central Athens. Built in white marble around 440 BC, in the same building programme as the Parthenon, it honoured the god of the sea at the point where ships rounding the cape first saw home. Roughly half of its Doric columns still stand, and against the sea and the setting sun they make one of the most famous silhouettes in Greece. The site also holds the lower Temple of Athena, the remains of a fortified ancient settlement and, cut into a column, the name Byron said to be carved by the poet himself. Legend places King Aegeus's fatal leap here, the story behind the name of the Aegean Sea. People come for the drive along the Athens Riviera, a swim below the cape and above all the sunset. The honest caveat: the temple is roped off, the site is small and shadeless, and in summer the last two hours before sunset bring coach tours and a real crowd along the fence.
