Tenement Museum

History Museum · New York, New York

Two Lower East Side tenement buildings — 97 and 103 Orchard Street — preserved as the homes of roughly fifteen thousand immigrants from over twenty countries between the 1860s and the 1930s. Number 97 was sealed up in 1935 when its landlord could not afford new fire codes and stood empty for fifty years, which is why the apartments survived. ⚠ IT IS GUIDED-TOUR-ONLY AND THERE IS NO WAY TO WANDER IN.

103 Orchard Street, New York, New York, 10002, United States

The visitor centre, exhibition and shop at 103 Orchard are FREE to enter. Neighbourhood walking tours run seasonally. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED — book on tenement.org.
