Tenkiller State Park

Oklahoma State Park On Lake Tenkiller, Impounded 1952 On The Illinois River · Vian, Oklahoma

A state park on the southern end of Lake Tenkiller, the clear-water reservoir in the Cookson Hills of eastern Oklahoma that divers call the Clear Water Wonderland because visibility can reach twenty feet or more, unusual for the state. The lake was made in 1952 by damming the Illinois River, and its 130 miles of rocky shoreline and deep, cool water made it a centre for scuba training, with several dive shops and sunken platforms and boats placed as training sites. The park has cabins, campgrounds, swimming beaches, boat ramps, a marina, trails through oak and hickory, and the Overlook Lodge area above the dam. Below the dam, the Lower Illinois River is cold enough for trout to be stocked year-round, and float trips run on the upper river near Tahlequah.
