Terlingua Ghost Town
Heritage Village · Terlingua, Texas
The ruins of a quicksilver mining town on the edge of Big Bend, abandoned when the cinnabar mines failed in the 1940s and now half reoccupied by a few hundred people living among the stone shells. The porch of the old trading post at sunset, with the Chisos Mountains going purple across the desert, is the most reliably good hour in West Texas, and it costs nothing.

An open ruin field on a public road — FREE, no gate, no ticket, open at all times. ⚠ THE TRADING POST AND THE STARLIGHT THEATRE KEEP THEIR OWN HOURS and much of the town is shut midday out of season; I could not verify current hours. ⚠ COME AN HOUR BEFORE SUNSET. ⚠ People live among the ruins — respect occupied buildings and the working cemetery. Rough unrailed terrain, no lighting after dark. Buy supplies in Alpine, eighty miles north.
