Termas de Rio Hondo
Argentina'S Best Known Thermal Spa Town, With Hot Mineral Water Piped To Hundreds Of Hotels; Also Home To An International Racing Circuit · Termas de Rio Hondo, Santiago del Estero
Termas de Rio Hondo is a spa town in Santiago del Estero where hot mineral water rises from under the plain and is piped straight into the town's hotels, so almost every hotel has its own thermal pools and many rooms have hot spring water from the tap. It is the most visited thermal destination in Argentina, and in the winter months coach groups of retirees arrive from all over the country for a week of soaking, which makes it a genuinely national destination rather than a local one. The water is warm, clear and mineral-rich, and the town is built around it: a central park, a casino, plenty of modest hotels, and the Rio Hondo dam and lake on the edge of town for fishing and water sports. More recently the town gained an international racing circuit, which has hosted the Argentine round of the MotoGP world championship, bringing a different crowd for a few days each year. It is a plain, practical resort, not a scenic one, and it is honest about that. Most people come in winter, when the dry mild climate is the draw.

Hotels run their thermal pools all day; public baths keep daytime hours. The peak season is winter, roughly June to September. Racing events at the circuit follow their own calendar.
