Terra Nova National Park
Newfoundland'S First National Park, Established 1957, Covering About 400 Square Kilometres Of The Bonavista Bay Coast Where The Boreal Forest Meets Deep Sheltered Sounds And Icebergs Drift Past In Early Summer · Glovertown, Newfoundland and Labrador
Terra Nova was NEWFOUNDLAND'S FIRST NATIONAL PARK, established in 1957 eight years after the island joined Canada, and it protects about four hundred square kilometres of the Bonavista Bay coast - a drowned landscape of long narrow sounds reaching inland between forested ridges, so that the boreal forest comes right down to salt water. The Trans-Canada Highway runs straight through it, which makes it one of the most easily reached national parks in Atlantic Canada, and yet the sounds themselves feel remote within minutes of leaving the road. ICEBERGS DRIFT DOWN FROM GREENLAND INTO NEWMAN SOUND IN LATE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER in a good year, whales feed here through the season, and the Ochre Hill lookout gives the whole system of inlets at once. It is a working landscape too - people have fished and cut timber here for centuries, and the park's exhibits say so.
